Research Interests:
· One of my research interests is to develop software and hardware that can facilitate immersive conferencing. To facilitate new people-centric work styles, Immersive Conferencing research is central to the vision of the Open Office Frontier. As broadband and high-performance computing become ubiquitous, we hope to identify directions and technologies that will support future information investment and inter-office collaboration. With this vision in mind, I am working on a hybrid camera system that combines the high resolution of an optomechanical video camera with the wide field of view always available from a panoramic camera. The control system integrates requests from multiple users so that each controls a virtual camera. The control system seamlessly integrates manual and fully automatic control. It supports a range of options from untended automatic to full manual control. The system can also learn control strategies from user requests. Additionally, the panoramic view is always available for an intuitive interface, and objects are never out of view regardless of the zoom factor. Besides my current projects at FXPAL, I spent two summers in Microsoft Research to develop an automatic camera management system that can automatically record and edit class/seminar videos. Research work involved in that system appeared as headline news on MSR homepage. Related paper of that research project got nominated for best paper award in ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Multimedia 2001 Conference.
·
I am also interested in developing systems that can facilitate natural
human-computer interaction. I propose a
novel framework for natural human-computer interaction in my thesis research
project. In this project, a multisensory mobile robot is used as the interface for
human-computer interaction, and spoken language is taught to the computer
through natural human-robot interaction.
Different from state-of-the-art speech recognizers, our approach
associates speech patterns directly with sensory inputs of the robot. This approach allows our system to learn
multilingual speech patterns online.
Further investigation of this project will include human-computer
interaction that involves more modalities, and applications that use the
proposed idea to train home appliances.
· Senior Research Scientist, FX Palo Alto Laboratory, April 2001 – present. My research work here is to generate, capture, index, browse and retrieve digital media. The goal is to make audiovisual media as easy to use as text. The research emphasis is on informal media, such as raw video shot at conferences and trade shows, videotaped meetings, lectures, and presentations, and handwritten and audio notes.
· Research Assistant, Image Formation and Processing Group, Beckman Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1997 – April 2001. For my thesis research, I develop software, hardware, and algorithms for a multisensory mobile-robot learning system. This learning system can learn short-time audio inputs online. According to what the robot learns, the robot can respond to its audio inputs. These short-time audio inputs can be multi-language speech utterances, such as English, Chinese, or Japanese. At this time, the robot cannot learn long sequences, such as speech sentences. We are now extending our work to long-sequence learning and recognition. Besides the research on audio learning, I also spend some time on computer vision research. We believe that audio and vision inputs are equally important for the robot to understand its outside world. Demos of these researches can be found at: http://www.fxpal.com/people/liu/research.html.
